“Still practicing.” I sat beside him, taking his hand. “I can’t eat. I’m too concerned about you. Plus, the whole scene. My stomach is a twisty mess. Like I’m on one of our favorite roller coasters that turned into a death trap.”

“Can we not,” Charlie groaned. “Just the thought has my stomach rolling.”

“Go back to sleep,” I urged. “I’ll keep trying your mom.”

Another lie.

I was officially freaking out.

“Yeah, my mom,” he murmured before passing out again.

I exhaled, sagging beside my best friend. I hated this. Everything I was trying to do was making our situation worse. Charlie might die, because I couldn’t get over myself and just take him to the damn hospital.

“We should take him,” Brom said, stepping from the shadows surrounding us. At first, he was a set of swirling mercury eyes then his body formed, separating from the night. I chalked the imagery up to being exhausted myself and scared out of my mind. “He can’t stay here.”

I also knew that. “If I take him to the hospital, they’re going to ask questions. Ones, even if I answer them, won’t do a damn bit of good, Brom.” I raked my fingers through my hair. “This town isn’t made for people like Charlie and me. Before all this happened, I was excited. We were getting out of here. Now… This. What am I supposed to do? How do I do it? I’m so lost.”

Forcing the tears burning the corners of my eyes, back, I squeezed Charlie’s hand, sure if I looked away, he would stop breathing and die on me. This was all so stupid. I knew deep down; Charlie didn’t start this. Someone got him to the field. Owen started the fight, from what I saw on the video, and even if Charlie fought back, he was no match for Owen.

“What if I told you, I could fix him or more importantly, someone I know has the ability to help him?” Brom stared at me with those unnatural eyes of his. Trust shining through, begging me to give him a chance.

“I’d say tell me what we need to do first to help Charlie get better,” I replied, sitting up a bit taller.

“Good, pet. Thank you for trusting me. Now, I want you to start from the beginning and don’t leave anything out,” Brom said, taking my hand in his.

I nodded deflating beside my best friend. “Okay.”

I explained everything, from the moment the bell rang to even my thoughts about Georgia not bothering us since Maestro showed up at school. I told him about Halloween festivities and Charlie and I deciding to participate this year, since it would be our last, here. How excited I was to see what costume he was going to. wear and how upset I was at the thought of not seeing them, Brom and Maestro. Solanine and Hawthorne and the rest. How stupid that must sound because how could we have formed friendships in such a short amount of time.

Brom laughed at that.

Then, I got to the fight.
